Splendid guidebook series to the Greek Islands

Having spent a holiday on Kythera this summer, which served as an off-stage location in The Four Horsemen (Isabella Querini is from the island), and having used Nigel McGilchrist’s guidebook to the island, I felt impelled to splash out and buy the complete series: McGilchrist’s Greek Islands, in 20 volumes. Perhaps Bettany Hughes is exaggerating when she says: “So evocative and informative, one hardly needs to go” – but only slightly. I certainly mean to make sure I get full use from the other 19 volumes by visiting as many of the remaining islands as possible (and I hope to make a repeat trip to Kythera and take in Antikythera and Elafonisos, also included in volume 8, as well). That should keep me busy for a while.

I have a suspicion that in the archives I’m going to come across evidence that Alvise Marangon visited some of these islands, a handful of them being still under Venetian rule in his days. That means that all trips there can be considered indispensable research…
