No, there are no dolphins in the canals of Venice. I believe they have been seen in the past in the lagoon but the photo that is circulating at the moment (at least the one I keep seeing) is from Cagliari, Sardinia.
Here’s a buy stromectol scabies online to an article in WMagazine that has the blazing headline “Silver Lining: Animals Now Frolicking in Venice Canals”. When you read the article through carefully it turns out that the “silver” refers to the new visibility of schools of silver fish in the clearer water of the canals. Dolphins are mentioned, but the popular photo is correctly assigned to Cagliari. And even the famous swans, which have also had their moment of internet-fame for their alleged return to Venice, are downgraded to long-term residents: “You actually posted a photograph of my hometown, Burano, the swans live in the lagoon and have actually been there for over 20 years.”
So the lesson here is to read carefully. We’re all naturally looking for silver-linings and if we think we can see them in the customarily murky green of the Venetian canals I guess it’s understandable that we try and grasp them.
Oh, and the article itself is not perhaps as thoroughly researched as it might have been. It mentions episodes of wild hogs ravaging portions of Venice, which certainly aroused my curiosity. When I clicked on the link (tantalisingly placed on the word “ravage”) it took me to an article about East Venice, Florida…
I’m glad you like the posts. And I hope you will be able to make it back very soon. Best wishes.
Many thanks for your posts Gregory. I came to the UK for a week but postponed my return home when they locked down those various towns; I was fearful Venice would be next. Then on March 6, with the news from friends and neighbours that all was good in the city I booked to fly home on the 9th. At that stage I felt the flight (BRS to VCE) was in itself a bit risky … and then news of the lock down was a step too far; I abandoned also that flight. So, holed up now in the UK it is great to get your insider info and to see your photos…
One of the very few disadvantages of living in a reasonably quiet corner of Castello is opening the shutters of a morning to photographers on Conzafelzi taking yet more shots of our palazzo. Nevertheless if you get to walk around again I would appreciate it if you did take that shot – it is extremely sad feeling it is not safe to travel home and it would be nice to see it as it is today (even with our shutters closed!)
By the way, Mission Impossible was due to use Conzafelzi the first week of this month for night shots. As I understand it, since we objected they did a deal with the residents of a building on the Fondamenta dei Felzi to put lights onto the bridge from there instead. I would like to say that I was delighted at the news wretched Tom Cruise and crew had fled Venice. However a friend who runs a local Osteria had a lucrative contract from that production company. Not only has he lost that, he is of course shut. Nightmare!
Ian, well, it is a very photogenic palazzo! Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll get a chance to pass that way in the next few weeks, since you are only supposed to walk to your local shops, unless you have a very specific reason for going further. This morning I went to get the newspaper and someone phoned me so I sat down on a bench in the park to talk and two carabinieri told me to move on, even though there was no-one else around; I guess it’s fair enough, because if one person sits down in the park, then others will as well…
Anyway, I hope it won’t be too long before you’re able to come back.
I really value this post because lots of people have sent me the news about dolphins and fish frolicking, and now I can send them an accurate account from a local to put these myths to rest.
Glad to be of use, Kathy!
